Apple Valley council member Clint Hooppaw is city’s new mayor – Twin Cities

Someone new is now sitting in the mayor’s seat in Apple Valley for the first time in 22 years, although he is a familiar face.

City council member Clint Hooppaw has been selected as mayor to fill the vacancy created when Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland was elected to a seat on the Dakota County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 2. The mayoral term runs through 2022.

The process for selecting a new mayor calls for nominations by council members. At Thursday’s meeting, council member Tom Goodwin, who was serving as the acting mayor for the meeting, nominated Hooppaw. No other nominations were made.

Hooppaw, who has been a council member since 2011, was officially sworn at the meeting, along with council members Tom Goodwin and Ruth Grendahl, who were re-elected to their positions in November.

In his full-time job, Hooppaw is the vice president of credit and collections for Wings Financial Credit Union, an Apple Valley-based cooperative. In addition to his council duties, Hooppaw has served as president of the city’s economic development authority and been on the Cedar Avenue Policy Advisory Committee. He also has been chair of both the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority and Suburban Transit Authority.

Last week’s appointment was just the second time in the city’s 52-year history and first since 1997 that the city council was assigned to select a mayor.

After 22 years as mayor, Hamann-Roland officially resigned her position Jan. 4 and assumed her duties as a member of the county board the next day. She was the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history.

“To do 22 years as mayor of the city’s 52 years, that’s impressive,” City Administrator Tom Lawell said Tuesday.

Hooppaw’s appointment leaves an opening on the five-member council which will be filled by vote of the mayor and council. The terms runs through 2022, and the city will be advertising the vacancy and accepting applications through Feb. 15.
