Apple’s iPhone Weather app is hilariously prudish

You can be certain it’s never 69 degrees in Cupertino. Never. In what might be a somewhat amazing level of prudishness, Apple’s default iPhone Weather app reportedly will not indicate that the temperature is one degree warmer than 68.

According to The Verge, some recent versions of the Weather app round up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit rather than admit the temperature is actually 69 degrees. Reportedly, this is true for the Weather app in iOS 14.6, but some, but not all previous versions.

It’s probably not necessary to explain to anyone who counts their age in double digits why Apple might be avoiding the number 69. Just in case, it’s also a sexual position (NSFW!).

Maybe the iPhone Weather app isn’t a prude

It’s been theorized that the base cause is that the app is converting from Celsius temperatures. When the temperature is 20 degrees Celsius, that converts to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. When it’s 21 degrees, than converts to 69.8 degrees, which rounds to 70 degrees. 69 gets skipped over.

Whether the cause is prudishness or rounding,  the bug has been fixed in iOS 15. That upcoming version of the Weather app will display 69 degrees as the current temperature.
