Apple’s new iPhone plans have been heavily leaked and, while the motivations are sound, the result is the ugliest iPhone to date. How did this happen? I suspect it is because Apple is currently working on a truly radical iPhone which is now taking shape.
For months, Apple has been showing us how it will build a folding iPhone, from the screen orientation, hinge design and structural integrity to the internal dynamics required to make glass fold. And now the exceptional tech graphic designer Concept Creator has fleshed them out.
Working with me, Concept Creator has followed up his iPhone Flex hinge concept video (embedded below), with renders that apply Apple’s design aesthetic to the form factor the company has been openly working on. This is a crucial step because Apple deliberately wraps its structural patents in misleading designs to throw viewers off the scent.
The result is a new iPhone form factor where the game-changing potential becomes obvious. Equal parts iPhone when folded and iPad when unfolded, it is likely to cost more than both combined at launch. After all, Huawei’s Mate X and Samsung’s Galaxy Fold are $2,000+ devices, but their launch this year shows the technology is very real.
Moreover in iOS, unlike Android, Apple already has a successful platform to switch between phone and tablet modes. If Apple can also follow through on its recent breakthroughs, like self-heating flexible glass when rivals are currently limited to plastic displays which scratch and crease, the company is likely to repeat its long pattern of Wait and Conquer.
All of which, unfortunately, is a lot more interesting than Apple’s upcoming 2019 iPhones. But clearly good things are coming to those who are prepared to wait, and save.
