Eco-friendly pupils crowned winners of calendar competition | News

Green-minded secondary pupils in North Yorkshire have been crowned winners in a calendar competition aimed at encouraging active travel.

A pupil from Upper Wharfedale School claimed the top prize in North Yorkshire County Council’s Sustainable Travel Calendar Competition.

Entrants were asked to create a piece of bespoke artwork to inspire others to get more active through healthier, environmentally greener journeys.

Twelve entries were chosen for the 2021 Calendar, with the overall winning entry taking pride of place on the front cover.

Pupils from Sherburn High School, Skipton Girls’ High School, Harrogate High School, St Augustine’s in Scarborough, Selby High School, Ryedale School and Norton College were all runners up.

Among the winners from Ryedale School is Wilf. He said: “I was surprised to have won. It was great that my work was used to support this cause. I bought a new mouse pad with my token and will continue to enjoy computer art work.”

His mother added: “I was taken aback when he brought home his prize. I was pleased and proud he was using his talent to promote such an important campaign.”

The calendars have been sent to County Council and District Council offices, libraries, secondary schools and councillors.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, said: “I would like to congratulate all entrants for taking part and producing some really impressive work. The competition has been a great way to inspire young people to live an active lifestyle, and teach them the need to embrace a sustainable future.

“As we enter another lockdown we know how important exercise is for health and wellbeing. I hope this is a time where families can enjoy walking or cycling together, which may inspire them to do so in the future.”

The winners received a £100 shopping voucher, with the 11 runners up receiving £25 shopping vouchers. All chosen entries received a copy of the bespoke calendar including their artwork.

All winning entries will be framed and showcased in a sustainable art exhibition at County Hall, Northallerton, when the building reopens to the public and will be displayed on our social media channels and website.
