Golf App VS Rangefinder VS Golf Watch – What’s The Difference?

Technology has long found its way into Golf. Whether it’s through an app, new gadgets, or little helpers like GPS watches. But what’s the difference between these tools, and which one is best suited for you?

We review the newest golf gear and help golfers make better buying decisions. Read more to find out the difference between Golf Apps, Rangefinders, and Golf GPS watches to decide what is best for you!

    Golf App

If you look for golf apps on AppStore or PlayStore, you’ll find countless options available. We’ll mainly focus on the app designed to use during a round of golf, not promotion or discount-related apps. You can think of golf apps as scorecards on steroids.

They will help you keep track of your scores and give you more insightful data on your game.

    That can include;

    1. Score per round
    2. Historical Score
    3. Handicap
    4. Green In Regulation
    5. Putts per Hole
    6. Fairways Hit

Some apps also offer you to connect with sensors you attach to your clubs to collect shot data. How far you hit your clubs, for example.

Some apps will also offer you to look at the layout of a hole before you play it. That’s a great way to manage your way around a course.

For example, you can see the distance to a hazard on the fairway and decide which club you’re gonna hit based on that.

Choose a club that either carries that hazard comfortably or stays well short of it. You might start to notice that not every hole is suited to hit your driver off the tee – even if that is your default club, to begin with.

    Rangefinder

You might know rangefinders from your hunting trip! They work by projecting a beam of light onto a reflecting object and measuring how long it takes for that beam of light to return to the device. Based on that, they tell you the distance in yards or meters.

In golf, you use them to manage your way around the course and pick the right clubs to hit.

The most common uses include to measure:

    1. Distance to the flag
    2. Distance to a Hazard
    3. Distance to the front, middle, and back of the green

You can even figure out how far you’ve hit a shot with a rangefinder. Just walk up to your ball, and measure the distance back to the tee box.

The best rangefinders on the market will also give you the option to adjust for slope, tell you about the biometric pressure and even include a GPS app.

All of that information affects your ball flight and can either increase or decrease the distance your ball will travel.

Based on this information, you can make better club choices and hit your targets more consistently.

    Golf Watch

A golf watch basically combines the best of both worlds.

You’ll get the course layout and stats from the app and the distances to hazards from the rangefinders. Note that rangefinders are often a bit more accurate than Golf GPS Watches, but only to a couple of yards. That difference won’t really matter for most players.

The good thing about watches is that they are quick to use and easy to integrate into your golf game. With an app, you’ll have to enter all the information yourself, take out your phone on the course, and remember how many puts you had, etc.

This can take quite a bit of time. Imagine you can do all of that just by tapping a button on your wrist!

In addition, you get even more stats to look at:

    1. Score per round
    2. Number of putts
    3. Fairways hit
    4. Greens in regulation
    5. Average distance per club
    6. Performance on recovery shots
    7. Performance on Bunker shots

All of that information can tell you precisely what you need to work on in your golf game!

    What To Do Next

If you don’t already have, give golf apps a try to see if the additional data will help your game.

If you’re only interested in knowing the distances to hazards and flag, go with a rangefinder.

But if you want to treat yourself to a new gadget you can use on the course, and outside of playing golf, invest in a Golf GPS Watch
