Google has reportedly canceled the Pixel 5a because of the global chip shortage

2020 saw the delayed release of the Pixel 4a thanks to the pandemic that caused the cancelation of Google I/O, and now it seems that its successor has been canned shortly after this year’s developer conference was announced. A new report says that the cancelation of the Pixel 5a is down to the global chip shortage that is affecting other segments similarly.

According to the usually reliable Jon Prosser, Google has canceled the Pixel 5a which is codenamed “Barbet”, and will instead continue to sell the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 during 2021. Canceling the Pixel 5a isn’t exactly a big deal when you consider how similar it appeared to the Pixel 4a in previous leaks, both in appearance and hardware.

Hopefully, this means that Google will concentrate its resources on the Pixel 6 handset that may launch somewhere around September or October. We’ve got high hopes for the Pixel 6 that will reportedly be powered by Google’s custom “Whitechapel” processor that was co-developed with Samsung.
