Halo Infinite Xbox beta ‘Update Needed’ error and how to fix it

The Halo Infinite multiplayer technical preview is now live, presenting the first hands-on opportunity with the next mainline Halo game before launch. The pre-release beta allows developer 343 Industries to host large-scale tests while doubling as a work-in-progress glimpse into the multiplayer. The first flight comes attached to an extensive list of known bugs and issues, as expected with any non-final software. However, Xbox console owners may encounter the pesky “Update needed” error when first getting started, with a quick workaround available.

Those eligible to access Halo Infinite Insider tests on Xbox are instructed to visit the Xbox Insider Hub, join the Halo Infinite preview, and download the provided application. This download installs a 200MB placeholder file on your console, which, when opened, fetches the full Halo Infinite beta download from Xbox Live. However, those testing Halo Infinite on the console may encounter a pesky “Update needed” error message, failing to pull the update from Xbox Live.

The error appears relatively widespread during the early hours of the Halo Infinite technical preview, although a quick workaround bypasses the message. Hard rebooting your Xbox will allow the console to fetch the update from Xbox Live, varying between 11GB and 19GB depending on the device used. Follow the steps below to fix the “Update needed” error.

    1. Press the Xbox button on your Xbox controller.
    2. Navigate to the Profile & system tab.
    3. Select Settings.
    4. Select the Power mode & start-up tile.
    5. Select the Full shut-down tile.
    6. Turn on your Xbox console.

Once powered down, restarting the Halo Infinite preview build will commence the full download via the Microsoft Store.
