Ever since the brand partnered up with Leica, Huawei’s P-series smartphones have given us incredible photographic features that allow us to take better pictures at increased distances with stunning results, especially with the P20 Pro and P30 Pro onwards. While Huawei’s partnership with Leica is no more, the upcoming P50 smartphone with its huge camera housing will likely feature yet another raising of the bar in the photography stakes but for now, there’s no word on when it will make its debut.
According to what Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu, said during the HarmonyOS 2.0 launch, the P50 does not have a launch date scheduled, despite showing off its design during the event. The translation of Richard Yu’s reasoning for the lack of specificity is “For reasons that you are all aware of…” which we take to mean the obvious impact of the ongoing US ban.
Whatever the reasons are for Huawei’s ongoing troubles with the US government, it’s clear that the electronics giant is conserving its resources for products that it can actually sell in the west, as evidenced by the recent launch of its new tablets, smartwatches, monitors, and earbuds. Products that don’t need access to Google’s apps and services to be fully functional for those that are invested in the search giants ecosystem. So for now, at least, we wait to see when or even if the P50 is launched and wonder how its delay will impact the upcoming Mate 50’s launch date.
