Ever since the Chromecast with Google TV launched in 2020 with its fancy interface and features we’ve wondered when or even if Android TV would ever be updated to the new aesthetic. While Android TV doesn’t appear to be getting the Google TV interface, the addition of new features such as Watchlist, the ability to finetune your recommendations, as well as trailers that play when you open up a title.

The update brings a universal Watchlist that lets you add titles by long-pressing on the title and tap “Add to Watchlist” or by selecting the Watchlist option on the detail page of the show, whether you are on your phone, laptop, or an Android TV device. The detail pages of shows will also start playing trailers automatically but you can disable this in Device Preferences if you prefer.

If you find that your recommended titles aren’t quite aligned with your tastes (and are bored), you can head over to the card titled “Improve your recommendations” to scroll through the titles that are shown and say if you love or hate them.

The new features should begin rolling out to Android TV devices from this week, so it might be an idea to check if an OTA is available to install.

He currently carries an OPPO Find X2 Pro in his pockets, a Galaxy Tab S5e in his backpack, and thinks nothing of lugging a 17-inch laptop around the world. When not immersed in the world of Android and gadgets, he’s an avid sports fan, and like all South Africans, he loves a good Braai (BBQ).
