Motorola has announced a major refresh of their Moto G lineup, getting their midrange phones ready for the slew of new devices at CES 2021. There’s a lot to unpack here, including 5G connectivity and batteries that are bigger than ever.
Motorola One 5G Ace
The best of the bunch is the new Motorola One 5G Ace. As the name implies, this one comes with 5G connectivity thanks to its Snapdragon 750G CPU. It’s paired with either 4 or 6GB of RAM, too, making this a fairly powerful device in its category, and Motorola hasn’t skimped on other hardware either.
There’s a spacious 6.7-inch FHD+ display, 5000mAh battery under the hood, and 64/128GB storage configuration options. The microSD card is present as well.
The back of the phone sports a rear camera setup with a 48MP sensor utilizing Moto’s Quad Pixel tech, an ultrawide sensor, and a 5x macro lens. Not a bad combination of hardware, although it doesn’t look like the headphone jack made the cut here.
At $400, it’s really not a bad alternative to the likes of Google’s new Pixel phones, if you’re willing to sacrifice some camera quality. Plus pretty much all of the major US carriers will have some variant of this to bolster their 5G lineup.
Moto G Stylus
Motorola has found some success offering entry level stylus-capable phones, especially for artists and power users that appreciate the precision that they can deliver.
There are some tradeoffs here, like a smaller 4000mAh battery and a Snapdragon 678 CPU, but overall the G Stylus seems to be a capable mid-ranger all on its own priced at $299.
This one also seems to do well on prepaid carriers, and Motorola has committed to selling it through Boost, Cricket, Consumer Cellular, and Republic Wireless after it goes on sale directly starting January 14th.
Moto G Power and Moto G Play
Rounding out the cheaper devices are the Moto G Power and Moto G Play. However, the Moto G Power now sits in an awkward position, since both of them rock 5000mAh batteries; longer battery life used to be the Power moniker’s selling point.
The 2021 models see the Moto G Power get an upgraded CPU with a Snapdragon 662, plus options for 4/64GB configurations that the Moto G Play won’t have. It also utilizes a triple-camera system instead of the dual cameras on the Moto G Play.
However, the Moto G Play does still have a headphone jack, which is notable despite its cheaper $169 price point. At just $199, however, the Moto G Power seriously crowds the bottom of Motorola’s 2021 lineup.
