No Man’s Sky Beyond VR crippled by crashes on Windows Mixed Reality headsets

No Man’s Sky received its “Beyond” update today, bringing with it a ton of improvements and, most notably, support for playing the game in virtual reality (VR). While VR is supported across PC and PlayStation VR, those trying to play the game on a Windows Mixed Reality headset have hit major issues getting the game to work.

In a Reddit thread, dozens of players have reported that the game simply crashes when they try to load it up on a Windows Mixed Reality headset via Steam. The issue seems to be related to the motion controlers, as some players have reported getting the game to load with them disconnected. Those already playing in VR have noted some other crashing issues with certain areas of the game as well.

It’s worth noting that only the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Valve Index are listed as supported VR platforms on No Man’s Sky’s Steam page. However, some games that haven’t been listed with official Windows Mixed Reality support have worked in the past.

For now, it’s unclear if Windows Mixed Reality support will be added, or what the precise issue is with launching it on Windows Mixed Reality headsets. If you had planned to dive into the game this way, it’s probably best to avoid plopping your cash down on No Man’s Sky for now.
