Nvidia has partnered up with MediaTek to develop Chromebook and laptop reference designs with RTX graphics onboard

Nvidia hasn’t done much in the mobile chip segment since its Tegra processors but the graphics card manufacturer has announced that it’s partnered up with MediaTek to bring Arm-based architecture to its RTX graphic cards that could be used in Chromebooks and laptops alike.

MediaTek has a history in the Chromebook segment after providing the chip that powered Lenovo’s popular Chromebook Duet, and now it and Nvidia are planning to develop reference designs for laptop and Chrome OS device manufacturers.

MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai said, “MediaTek is the world’s largest supplier of Arm chips, used to power everything from smartphones, Chromebooks and smart TVs. We look forward to using our technology and working with NVIDIA to bring the power of GPUs to the Arm PC platform for gaming, content creation, and much more. GPU acceleration will be a huge boost for the entire Arm ecosystem.

The combination of Nvidia’s RTX graphics and Arm architecture probably won’t result in the level of performance boost that a dedicated graphics card would provide, but it could be a significant step-up from the integrated GPUs in Intel’s processors. The development could also result in increased graphic performance without the usual hit on battery life that usually follows, bringing about wider support for 4K and 120Hz displays rather than being able to run console-quality games.

The only bad thing is that it may be 12-18 months before we see the Nvidia-MediaTek partnership bear results, but the future of Chromebooks is looking good.
