As reports point to LG halting development on its rollable smartphone, the OPPO X 2021 looks to be on course to launch this year. Besides the ability to unroll its display from 6.7 to 7.4-inches, it appears that the rollable smartphone will also sport wireless air charging technology, as shown on OPPO’s MWC Shanghai microsite.
Wireless air charging doesn’t need your phone to be attached to a cable or placed on a mat or stand. Instead, it charges your phone so long as it’s within a certain distance of the charging mat, which is 10cm at the current time. It doesn’t sound like a great distance but it’s a fledging technology that is something of a holy grail. According to the press blurb, so long as the OPPO X 2021 is within 10cm of the charging mat it will receive up to 7.5W of charge, allowing uses to perhaps use the phone while it’s being charged without a cable in sight.
As for the OPPO X 2021, you can see it in action in the video we’ve embedded above, rolling and unrolling as well as charging in mid-air. While the 10cm charging distance isn’t going to let you wander the house with your phone while it charges, it is a fledgling technology, and no doubt the coverage will expand as it is further developed. What do you think of OPPO’s Wireless Air Charging feature?
