At the present time, Samsung is the king of the hill, moon, and er, Galaxy when it comes to folding smartphones. Sure, there are a couple of brands attempting to compete such as Motorola with its Moto Razr 5G (review) and Huawei’s Mate X2 that has certain software issues, but Samsung learned a lot of hard lessons with the original Galaxy Fold that is holding it in good stead. So much so, that Samsung is reportedly manufacturing folding displays for Google, OPPO, and Xiaomi.

According to the Korean-based new outlet The Elec, Samsung Display is producing a folding-in display for Google, which adds some weight to the rumor (9to5Google) going around that the search giant is considering launching its own foldable smartphone during 2021. It’s said that the folding display is 7.6-inch in size which is the same as the panel used by the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which also appears to be the form factor that Google is following.

Xiaomi is apparently also following the Galaxy Z Fold 2 premise but with a slightly larger 8.03-inch folding-in display and a 6.38-inch external panel. Treading down the same path as Motorola’s Moto Razr 5G is OPPO, which is purportedly developing a clamshell design that opens up to a 7.7-inch display, with a 1.5 to a 2-inch external display.

The Elec reports that Google, OPPO, and Xiaomi will launch foldable handsets during 2021, which should truly bring the niche segment closer to the mainstream market.
