Buzz.ie put Panasonic’s latest travel zoom pocket camera TZ95 through its paces
The Panasonic Lumix TZ95 is an excellent travel zoom camera with a Leica-branded 30x optical zoom lens.
The range of the lens — from 24mm to 720mm (equivalent) — is outstanding and the quality of the images at 30x are far superior to any smartphone rival.
For example, much was made of the 50x zoom on Huawei’s P30 Pro launched earlier this year.
And as exciting as that proposition was and is, the much better image quality from this camera actually costs less than half the price of the smartphone.
Aside from its zoom prowess, the TZ95 offers a decent standard of image quality from many environments.
Colours from the 1/2.3in 20MP sensor are bright and sharp — especially in good weather.
However, noise can sometimes become a problem when you are shooting in low-light conditions.
Panasonic’s compact TZ95 fits comfortably in any coat pocket or bag, so you can take it anywhere without too much fuss.
It’s got a great electronic viewfinder for a camera this size, with a relatively large view and high resolution.
Video footage from the camera is also impressive.
It delivers high quality 4K UHD recording at 30 frames per second (fps) or 25fps — with great audio quality too.
FullHD video can be recorded at 60, 50, 30 and 25fps.
The TZ95 can shoot at up to 10 frames per second (fps) at the full 20MP resolution.
And its tilting touchscreen is really useful and a big plus. (All cameras should have a fully tilting screen, in my opinion.)
The Intelligent Auto feature on this shooter does a great job of selecting the most relevant settings for you.
But for those who enjoy playing around and experimenting, there is a full range of manual controls along with raw recording.
Other key features worth shouting about include 4K Photo capability at 30fps, decent battery life, built-in flash and and built-in WiFi.
Battery life is rated at 380 shots, according to Panasonic, when using the rear screen.
And you will get 250 shots when using the EVF.
The camera’s battery is charged with a standard MicroUSB cable.
On the upside, most people have plenty of those cables lying around. The downside is that recharging is nowhere near as zippy as with USB-C PD cables.
How much does TZ95 cost?
Panasonic Lumix TZ 95 costs €459 from Conns Cameras and Camera Centre.
