Remember when the first smartphones with 8GB launched and people opined that it was simply too much, asking why a phone would need so much memory? In the years since we’ve seen smartphones such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra and even the mid-range OnePlus Nord sporting 12/16GB and 12GB of RAM respectively. On March 10th, we will see the ASUS ROG Phone 5 launch sporting up to 18GB of RAM, which is more than most laptops.
The 18GB of LPDDR5 mobile RAM is made by Seoul-based SK Hynix, and is around 20% faster than previous LPDDR5 DRAMs. The company has begun mass-production of the 18GB module which will make its debut on the ROG Phone 5.
Besides the monstrous amount of RAM, we expect the ROG Phone 5 to feature the Snapdragon 888 processor, an OLED display with a high refresh rate, as well as a rear panel with a gaming-centric design with RGB lighting. We can expect some form of fast-charging as well as the presence of an audio jack and Android 11.
The ROG Phone 5 launches on March 10th with a live stream event that you can watch via the embedded YouTube link above. Do you think the ROG Phone 3’s successor has enough RAM?
