Verizon’s Galaxy S8 is getting an update some four years after it launched

The tech world was stunned, or at least mildly surprised when Verizon’s Galaxy Tab S2 received an update during November 2020 that brought the October Security Patch to the former flagship tablet. Now it’s the turn of Verizon’s Galaxy S8 series to receive an OTA update, some four years after it was launched.

Both the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are receiving the OTA which brings them to build versions PPR1.180610.011.G950USQU8DUA2 and PPR1.180610.011.G955USQU8DUA2 respectively. Besides upgrading the security patch to December 2020, the update is said to include “performance updates”, which is a pretty vague term. This is likely to be the second to last update that Samsung dishes out to the Galaxy S8 if the quarterly update schedule is followed.

If anything, it’s yet another sign that Samsung has stepped up its software game and honoring its newfound commitment to giving its customers the support they deserve.

If you haven’t received notification that the update is available, you might want to head to Settings, System Updates, and tap the Check for Updates button to see if you can give the servers a nudge.
