‘We wanted to show a small token of thanks’ – The mosque delivering 100 hot meals to NHS frontline workers

It goes without saying that NHS staff have been giving their utmost to care for stricken patients around the clock.

A London mosque has pledged to donate hot meals on a weekly basis to the staff at one the largest hospitals in London.

East London Mosque (ELM) and the London Muslim Centre have volunteers who prepare the meals.

These are then delivered to the intensive care unit of the Royal London Hospital.

The meals consist of both meat and vegetarian options, last week being a chicken biryani and chickpea biryani.

The first delivery was made on the 15 January and the mosque, based in Whitechapel, are planning to carry on delivering.

Dilowar Khan, the Director of the East London Mosque Trust, said, “In these difficult times, our NHS has been at the forefront of saving the lives of so many people.”

He added, “We commend them for their hard work and bravery, setting aside their own families to help others.

“It’s with this spirit of gratitude that we wanted to show a small token of thanks to our long standing neighbours, the Royal London Hospital.”

NHS staff have worked incessantly and been exposed to traumatic instances during this entire pandemic.

One member who works at Royal London shared her appreciation for the ELM’s gesture of goodwill.

Despite the ELM temporarily closing its doors to worshippers due to Government guidelines, they continue to provide a food bank delivery service for those in need in the local community, a counselling service for women, and its Imam’s advice helpline.
